Smile frown vase

Earthenware vase in the shape of a two-faced woman. I’ve made a number of works on the theme of the smile and frown. I was thinking of Blake’s poem The Smile in which all can be redeemed by the smile of smiles. In the meantime the frown of frowns ‘sticks in the heart’s deep core And it sticks in the deep backbone’. Somewhere there is the old fashioned double doored weather houses of childhood, a primitive barometer where the man comes out when it’s going to rain, and the woman when it’s sunny. Also classical two-faced Janus heads.
